Secor Metropark National Center for Nature Photography

Toledo, Ohio

This is a renovation of an existing building within the Metroparks Toledo Area system. The purpose of this renovation was to gain additional gallery and classroom space for the National Center for Nature Photography by rearranging the existing floor plan and to provide interior access to the second floor without having to go outside. (The second floor was originally designed to house a line-in park ranger with separate entry independent of the center). Upgrade of public toilet facilities. Upgrade and renovate the large multi-purpose rentable space and enhanced visitors experience. Mechanically replace the heating system and provide new HVAC controls.

Through a renovation process the Metroparks Toledo Area can successfully extend the life of a facility originally constructed in 1958 to meet the needs of the park patrons. The building has been previously renovated in the past successfully meeting the needs of that particular time. Limited by financial constraints it made more sense to renovate than to demolish and reconstruct. Also the time that the facility could be taken off line played into this decision since the rentable space provided a source of revenue to the Metropark system.
