Bowling Green Middle School and Addition

Bowling Green, Ohio

Built on the existing high school site, this 137,807 square foot new school was designed to incorporate several sustainable strategies including installing a light colored roof to reduce the cooling load, installing highly efficient water fixtures, appliances, and HVAC equipment. The project successfully diverted more than half of construction waste from landfills and integrated nearly 25% of recycled materials into the construction. Other sustainable strategies included harvesting nearly half of the building materials from within 500 miles and installing low VOC materials.

The School is designed for 600 – 7th and 8th grade students. The original design provided a space for a future 6th grade wing which was recently added. The addition includes 21,938 sq. ft. single story classroom space along with a 1,122 sq. ft. cafeteria addition. The classroom space features 9 classrooms, two 1296 sq. ft. science classrooms, and two 890 sq. ft. science labs. The new addition also has a 2700 sq. ft. mechanical mezzanine above the main corridor consisting of hollow core concrete decking mounted to solid concrete fill walls below. The design creates a safe zone for the students and staff in the corridor below and allows for the mechanical equipment to be housed above, making for ease of equipment maintenance.

Each of the classrooms is constructed with large windows to allow for as much natural sunlight as possible to filter into the room. The corridor features poured terrazzo flooring for both longevity and ease of maintenance. The addition is totally lighted by LED fixtures and temperature controlled with high efficient HVAC units, affording the school district the most energy efficient system possible.

The original school was awarded LEED Gold Certification from the U.S. Green Building Council.
